"Do you know when you'll be chatting with Haim?" a text arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're repeated Grammy contenders.

Like all the greatest groups, they're a inseparable unit. Their music videos repeatedly show them marching in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such unfettered joy you inevitably think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the ultimate honor. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate young girls to make music."

Grammy Milestone

The trio have called into a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-woman band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the nomination resonates with the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the women that came before us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The record emerged from a time of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that unique liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The themes detail endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them working out in the moment who they want to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to consciously practice blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed toughness required a fresh approach – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the percussion.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Laughter

The band's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their personal horror stories.

A former partner broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an global fan base.

Yet Haim will consistently be their top commitment.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was a young child," says Alana. "There is no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
